i’ve heard that corn kernels can be used as a fashion accessory, but is it durable enough to last for a long time?

No, not really -especially in their raw as-found-in-nature state. When corn kernels are exposed to moisture they expand and moisten and you look like you are wearing niblets. You will be very popular with birds! Indeed you might find them flocking to you in order to have a little snack. They are difficult to store safely as corn is a food source for rodents and many insects. Add to that that all foodstuffs are prone to mildew, mold and rot and the rot will spread to whatever the item is being stored with. Plus they eventually dry out, crack and fall apart. it’s part of being natural, all things naturally rot and return to the earth.

This is why grains, seeds nuts and plant materials are almost never used for jewelry or embellishing clothes in their natural state. When they are used they must be shellacked, sealed and varnished to prevent damage from moisture, mold and anything that wants to eat them. If you do want to use corn kernels or other seeds be sure that they are sealed with some type of varnish or shellac; they won’t look as natural but they will last a bit longer. Another note: even sealed they will eventually dry out, crack and break apart, it will just take longer.
